P009 – The Bendz

Active ingredient – Silicon and germanium NOS transistors, for classic Tonebender sounds.

Recommended for – Guitarists looking for a high-gain fuzz sound, full of mids, but don’t want to deal with the instability of germanium.

The Tonebenders were Sola Sound’s response to the Fuzz Face. Their design with an extra gain stage brought a more aggressive sound with more sustain than the classic Fuzz Face – in addition to having smaller input and output capacitors, offering a more balanced tone in relation to the bass, with cutting mids and an almost vocal characteristic – which greatly marked rock and roll and garage rock of the 60s and 70s.

But not everything is perfect – in addition to the huge size, characteristic of pedals from that period, such fuzz units were entirely made with germanium transistors, quite temperamental – varying the sound and noises even depending on the ambient temperature, and operating only with 9v batteries. The Bendz uses in its construction two silicon transistors, also NOS (New Old Stock), selected to offer the best sound performance, stability, and reliability for live use, in addition to featuring the extremely rare Mullard OC140 germanium transistor (which is, in essence, the NPN version of the OC75, famously used in the best old Tonebenders), allowing the pedal to be operated with a standard Boss power supply.

The Bendz is a modern reinterpretation of a classic circuit, bringing all the sound and personality that made the Tonebender Jimmy Page and Mick Ronson’s favorite pedal – offering a realistic price, the possibility of being used on any pedalboard without resorting to batteries, and without the instability and characteristic noises of this classic circuit.
